What is the best dog for me?

I was thinking about somesort of mastiff i like who the french mastiff looks and their temperment.if you have any suggestions on a loving fairly active "gaurd dog" mastiff please tell me i am also looking at a lab pit possibly retriver mix i used to have one that was so smart but loving and protective but just give me some info about your faviorite mastiff please
