On the Argos advert the song reads "the 5 and 10". What is the 5 and 10?
On that actual advert, it means if you spend over 50, you'll get a 5 voucher and if you spend over 100, you'll receive a 10 voucher. But the words in the song by Perry Como refer to a 5 and 10 store (5 cents, 10 cents), as common in the US during the 50's & 60's. They were based on the old US 5 & Dime store which was a type of shop started in the old West as the local general store. In the old days, they were usually owned by a local person who lived upstairs. They sold fabric, toys, candy by the pound (weight not the currency) or ounce, cologne, some clothing, a little bit of baby stuff, some hardware, but mostly they provided daily items used in the home, except for food. The 5 & 10 stores can still be found and the link below will take you to a description of one in Branson, Missouri.
